The year 2016 proved to be remarkable for Pakistani cinema as dozens of movies on different themes were released last year. From comedy to romantic drama and from political to animated, Pakistani movie goers were in for a treat with such variety and development of local cinema.

The latest movie that hit the theaters in last week of December and still running successfully all across Pakistan is Saya e Khuda e Zuljalal. The poster and the first look of the movie give an impression of a complete war movie but it is much more than that.

Saya e Khuda e Zuljalal is an action-packed, patriotic movie, with stellar cast, featuring some memorable scenes and stimulating theme. This is a debut film for both its director, Umair S. Fazli, and producer, Dr. Tauseef Razzaq, which took six years to make.

The 2 hour 50 minutes long movie is based on historical events which bring to life nation’s real-life heroes: Major Shafqat Baloch, Major Shabbir Shareef (Shaheed) and Major Aziz Bhatti (Shaheed). The film is dedicated to the Air Force hero of the 1965 war, Squadron Leader M. M. Alam, who holds the record of downing five Indian Air Force aircraft in less than a minute.

Saya e Khuda e Zuljalal narrates events of 1947 partition, the War of 1965 and the War of 1971, enlivening spirited, devoted and dedicated heroes of our nation.

The story revolves around Hamza (Javed Shaikh), a retired army officer, writing a diary to tell his son, Haider (Moammar Rana), about the challenges faced by the Pakistan’s Forces during the partition time and the 1965 War. With these historical stories, Hamza is trying to remind his son of the path of truth and glory while advising him to give up corrupt lifestyle.

The film targets the social ills of society, the corrupt attitude and acts of the public, police and politicians, highlighting how it is leading to downfall of the nation. By recreating the events of 1947 Partition, the Wars of 1965 and 1971, the filmmakers have done a marvelous effort by bringing the brave and tragic to light and at the same reminding the young generation of the sacrifices made to create and protect Pakistan. The movie highlights the history that has been overlooked by the filmmakers for long.

The war of Independence and the love of Pakistan is a theme that Dr. Tauseef Razzaque holds close to his heart. With this movie, Dr. Tauseef aims to revive the spirit of Pakistan, invigorate the people and instill the love for the nation.
The cast includes Javed Sheikh, Moammar Rana, Shafqat Cheema, Afzal Khan, Firdous Jamal, Jia Ali, Noor, Rachel Gill and Nimra Khan. The cast also features many newcomers.

Nayyar Ejaz fits his role as Moulvi Naseer who is a brilliantly evil-minded person. Moammar Rana does justice to his role as the corrupt cop while Sohail Sameer is charming as the upright Major Faraz. With this movie, Umair Fazli has indeed joined the list of the brilliant directors of Pakistani cinema.

The music of the movie is not very impressive but gets well along with the movie. The demanding plot and realistic war sequence made this a perfect war thriller. The storyline is simple and the characters stereotypical but sharp dialogues, action stunts amazing cinematography make this a well-executed war movie.

Overall, SKZ is an impressive effort, a memorable experience that will leave you with passion and enthusiasm to be your better self in every way. Go give it a watch!
