Zubaida Tariq a very popular chef, household tips expert and television personality passed away last night in Karachi after a protracted illness, her brother Anwar Maqsood confirmed.

According to her family members, she was taken to a hospital last night after her condition suddenly deteriorated as she was suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

Zubaida Apa well-known TV personality across Pakistan a phenomenon of her very own. She hit the screen in the nineties on “Dalda ka Dastarkhawan” a cooking show sponsored by the cooking oil giant Dalda, and was an instant trendsetting success – she was Pakistan’s first celebrity cook and quite likely among the first non-film star celebrities in the country.

Zubaida Appa Born into an educated family of Hyderabad Deccan in 1945, her family migrated to Pakistan in 1947. They settled in Karachi, PIB Colony, where she lived with her five older sisters and four brothers. She was youngest of 9 siblings which include late playwright Fatima Surraya Bajiya and noted satirist Anwer Maqsood.

At a time when cable TV is saturated with glamorous celebrity chefs and Instagram is an endless curation of “food porn” by hipster foodies. She has published several cookbooks and runs a restaurant with her son, but has never thrust herself into the spotlight.

Zubaida was working with Masala TV and her cooking programme ‘Handi’ had been the most watched cooking show of Pakistan. She covered more than 1000 episodes for the show.

For more than a decade, Zubaida Apa was quite the showstopper in her colour-coordinated clothes, sandals and set of bangles, with coiffured hair and make-up.

She has always just been herself, and there is something reassuring about how she has remained the same over decades and she looks like she uses all the totkay she suggests, and that has inspired generations to trust her.

The funeral prayers of Zubaida Tariq will be offered at Sultan Mosque, Defence, Karachi, after Jumma prayers. Pakistani people from all walks of life poured a rich tribute to famous recipes specialist, below we have collected some of the reactions to her demise:
