All bike riders and passengers in Islamabad will have wear helmets, Islamabad police have announced.

This safety move will make Islamabad the first city in Paksitan to successfully enforce the use of helmets for all motorbike riders — including passengers.

Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) proclaimed that starting from October 11 morning, all motorcyclists, as well as women and children riding pillions, must wear helmets while riding.

Those found hanging their helmets and violating the regulations will be fined the same way motorbike riders are.

At a media briefing on Monday, SSP-Traffic Malik Matloob explained: “Motorbike pillion riders are as vulnerable to head injuries and their lives are as important as the riders are. This is why we are enforcing the use of helmets for pillion riders too.”

SSP Matloob said that a motorcycle rider will be penalized if the pillion rider is not wearing a helmet.

SP-Traffic Khalid Rashid explained that the fine for not wearing a helmet will be Rs100 each — to be imposed on both the rider and the pillion if the latter is not wearing a helmet.

The initiative has emerged after a month-long campaign to educate motorcyclists about the importance of using helmets for safety. During this campaign, the police also distributed over 300 helmets, provided by sponsors, among commuters.

Traffic police is making best use of social media to spread awareness about life safety and urging people to stop using lame excuses to avoid the fine.

To encourage bike riders to wear helmets, Islamabad Traffic Police has requested the district administration to bind motorbike showrooms in the capital to provide two helmets with ever motorbike sold in the city.
