New Bicycle lanes in Islamabad to encourage more people, especially children, to adopt healthy mode of travel

ISLAMABAD – The launch on new bicycle lanes in Islamabad is a moment of celebration for all cycling lovers in the city.

The dedicated bicycling lanes are an initiative of Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation (IMC) and Capital Development Authority (CDA) to overcome environmental pollution and to promote healthy lifestyle and cycling culture.

The lanes have officially been launched by Mayor of Islamabad Sheikh Ansar Aziz at a colourful ceremony at D-Chowk Islamabad on 12 Novmber 2016.

During the first phase segregated cycling lanes, Constitution Avenue, School Road (F-6), Margalla Road (F-6/F-7) and Seventh Avenue would be marked for the cyclists which would be later replicated on all major roads of the city under the  Islamabad Green Charter.

‘The beauty of the federal capital and preservation of its natural environment was among the government’s priorities’ said Sheikh Anser Aziz while addressing to the participants.

‘After signing the Green Charter, Islamabad has become 101st city of the world and 1st of Pakistan to have signed the charter to adopt United Nation urban environmental accord and following the action plan of the accord,’ the Mayor informed.

A large number of cycling lovers, city official and foreign dignitaries attend the ‘Launch of Cycle Lanes in Islamabad’ event.

The Embassy of Denmark’s Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. Jakob Jakobsen was one of the many cyclists on the roads of Islamabad during the inauguration of cycling lanes for the city of Islamabad.

Ambassador of Argentina to Pakistan also participated in the cycling during the ceremony. In his address, the Argentinean envoy said that Islamabad was one of the beautiful cities of the world and that the green charter is a serious effort in making Islamabad more beautiful and green.

Kashif Abbasi, renowned TV anchor appreciated the efforts for promotion of healthy activities and said that such activities are the best recreational activities for the citizens of the Federal Capital.

Prime Minister’s Focal Person for Green Pakistan Syed Rizwan Mehboob expressed that it was an honour for the first ever elected Islamabad mayor to sign the Islamabad Green Charter and that they have accepted the challenge to make Islamabad a beautiful and environment-friendly city.

The ceremony was attended by Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) Chief Officer Muhammad Suleman Khan Warraich, MCI and CDA officials, members of civil society, representatives of Islamabad Cycling Association, elected representatives of Islamabad and a large number of citizens – particularly cycling lovers.
