After much anticipation and successful shows in Karachi and Lahore, KopyKats Productions’ latest play ‘Bananistan’ is finally coming to the capital city, Islamabad.
The much-hyped and awaited play ‘Bananistan’ is scheduled to be premiered on 15 November at National Library and will run till 4 December 2016, KopyKats Productions team announced at a media briefing in Islamabad.
Set in 2030, Bananistan depicts a play within the play where all the major politicians have chosen to aspire for careers on the stage. The play shows a martial law imposed Pakistan where the assemblies have been dissolved and the constitution has been declared invalid. Following the martial law, politicians have been forced to earn their livelihood from various odd jobs while the media is on complete lockdown and theater is the only allowed means of entertainment.
This political satire is a concept by Dawar Mehmood and is written in collaboration with Saqib Sumeer, Mustafa Chaudry, Faisal Chaudry,Salman Khan and Fawad Baig.
All major power players from Pakistani politics such as Imran Khan (played by Dawar Mehmood), Altaf Hussain (Saqib Sumeer), Asif Ali Zardari (Hammad), Mian Nawaz Sharif (Taha), Maulana Fazlur Rehman (Mustafa Chaudhry of Banana News Network), Qaim Ali Shah (Shafqat Khan) and Shahbaz Sharif (Umar) will feature in this cheeky production that is laced with innuendo.
Saqib Sumeer, who is playing the role of Altaf Hussain and has also co-written the script said: “The play is pure entertainment and there is nothing to be taken personally.”
KopyKats’ previous productions like Pawnay 14 August, Sawa 14 August and the most recent Siachen had been penned by Anwar Maqsood and were hugely successful. Bananistan, however, remains the exception and is penned by Dawar Mehmood himself.
“It’s a play within a play and it reveals the world of theater, the theatrical exercises, the backstage politics, the food breaks, the spot boys roaming around and the tussles between the director and producer,” reveals Dawar. “And in the midst of it all, there is a perpetual comic diatribe going on between the characters.”
KopyKats Productions started their journey from Islamabad during the golden period of amateur theater and is the first-of-its-kind original Urdu theater. The company’s philosophy is to create a unique product for theater lovers.
The group also announced that after Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, ‘Bananistan’ will also hit the theaters in Peshawar, Faisalabad, Multan and Sialkot.
The play will run in Islamabad from November 15 till December 4 at the National Library of Pakistan (view location).
